On a scale of 1 to 10…..

During my second year at University, I would write a summary of each day of what I did and how I felt. Little did I know, it would genuinely prove to be very crucial later on, but it was the beginning of my journaling journey. For me, journaling has really allowed me to unravel my thoughts and de-clutter my mind, every day over the past years.

If it’s something you have never tried before and, it seems weird and overwhelming at first, break it up into ‘topics’ and give yourself questions. For example, I use a title for each page such as a ‘Work’ or ‘Family.’ Although, you usually find once you start writing, you just pour onto the page. Whilst I am writing, I like to pretend I am writing to either myself or someone I really trust to break down my emotions too.

Often, I realise that what I thought was the issue, is not the true root of the matter. I remember my previous job (the one I hated), I would grab a piece of paper and write how I am feeling at that moment.  Then I would put it in the shredder and carry on. Times were really tough.

I think the most significant benefits are that journaling allows you to break down the issues with yourself and from that, you can deduce what action to take forward. For me, it’s a cheap and somewhat easy self-counselling method, and very underrated.

Recently, I have started to end my journaling ‘sessions,’ with one to three things that I am grateful for, regardless of my emotions. The best advice someone ever told me is that ‘you are the only home you have,’ and it took a while for me to understand. I like my space to be tidy and organised, therefore my mind should also reflect this.

It’s been real,

Rue
