Drip (adjective) – A term used to describe a person who is trendy and has a good dress sense. This individual is normally dressed in luxury designer brands e.g.: Gucci.

My drip is different to your drip.
If you scroll through Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat, you will sometimes see pictures of people in their best outfits and occasionally luxury designer. I find it very crazy that designer clothing worth hundreds and sometimes thousands of pounds, is a ‘common’ part of attire for people in my age range.
I love luxury clothing, the quality and even the name, particularly the bags. I understand the pressure to wear nice clothes and stay within the trend, in order to fit. Although, at the same time it’s an oxymoron of also trying to be an individual against the crowd. I just don’t believe you need to drip into financial difficulty in order to do it.
Doing it for the gram…
I believe you can genuinely like expensive clothes, even just for their namesake. The issue is not people wearing designer, the main issue is what are your primary intentions. Being truly honest, all of us are on social media for some sort of validation (unspoken truth).
However, this should never exceed your need to be your true authentic self. Sometimes, I see people driven by the need to outdo or out show other people, in order to prove they are something they are not. Not only is this damaging to the bank balance, but the mental strain it must cause to a person must be draining.
Live within YOUR means.
I remember in first year, I had friends who were wealthy, and as wealthy people do they eat out at good restaurants. However, they ate out for breakfast, lunch and dinner which was normal part of their routine. After three days of trying to keep up, I was humbled back to the basmati rice at home because financially, I could not keep up, it was a norm that they could sustain. I also learnt to say ‘No, I don’t have money for this’, it may not mean I’m ‘super noodles for dinner’ poor, but this money I have is not for this purpose right now.
I’m really not here how to tell people how to spend their money, but I am here to encourage you to prioritise your financial goals first. You truly never know how people afford a certain lifestyle, 99% of my named brand clothing is from gifted from my Dad. People will only post their best moments, which is why you should not hold social media to such a high level. If you want a Chanel bag, get your Chanel bag if that’s something you want without trying to impress people first.
Being honest with yourself about where you are financially will not only help you now but also in the future, so you can even buy yourself that baby Birkin. The only person you really need to compete with, is the person you’re trying to be versus where you are now.
It’s been real,
Rue x.
